Biography

Kerstin Klipstein-Grobusch, MSc, MSc, PhD, is an Associate Professor and Vice-Chair Global Health at the Julius Center for Health Sciences and Primary Care, Department of Global Public Health and Bioethics, University Medical Center Utrecht, The Netherlands and Visiting Professor at the School of Public Health, University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa and the Institute of Tropical Medicine, University of Tübingen, Germany.

She is an epidemiologist and nutrition scientist with over 25 years of experience in international research capacity building in epidemiology and public health including in  sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) as previous Academic Head of the Master of Science in Epidemiology programme at the University of the Witwatersrand and as a principal investigator and collaborator in capacity building training programmes and courses in epidemiology, biostatistics, public and global health such as the NIH-funded Wits Non-Communicable Disease Research Leadership Programme.

She leads the Julius Center’s Global Health research on cardiovascular and cardiometabolic disease in low-resource settings and vulnerable populations that addresses (i) the influence of urbanisation and migration on cardio-metabolic disease risk; (ii) the short- and long-term consequences of non-communicable diseases during pregnancy on maternal and child health; and (iii) communicable and non-communicable co-and multimorbidity. She is the Utrecht based principal investigator on several implementation science projects that aim to improve and scale-up care for hypertension in Africa, Asia and Europe such as the iHEART-SA (Integrating heart health in HIV care in South Africa (NIH)), SCUBY (Scaling-up diabetes and hypertension in vulnerable populations (EC H2020)) or MRC-PaLS (Patient-led support groups in the management of hypertension and diabetes in low-resource settings (UKRI). She has supervised and mentored over 100 Master, PhD and postdoctoral fellows and published over 250 peer-reviewed papers.

In her current position as Associate Professor and Vice-Chair Global Health her focus is on the development of global and planetary health research and education (www.globalhealth.eu) at the Julius Center for Health Sciences and Primary Care, University Medical Center Utrecht, The Netherlands.

Academic and societal activities include memberships of institutional committees and academic/research networks. Amongst others, she is Deputy Editor of the World Health Federations’ scientific journal Global Heart and Executive Board Member of the European Global Health Research Institutes Network (EGHRIN).
