Genetic risks 

Within the field of brain-based developmental disorders genetics play an important role. Many neurodevelopmental disorders have underlying genetic deficits.  Within this research theme the genetic alterations in relation to autism are studied. Additionally a longitudinal follow-up study of children with the 22q11.2 deletion syndrome is performed.

Structure and connections

To better understand the neurobiology of BBDD we study the brain of children and adults with these disorders. Our research uses cutting-edge imaging techniques, such as functional MRI, Diffusion Tensor Imaging, High-Frame-Rate cerebral ultrasound techniques and functional NIRS, to investigate change in brain structure and functionality. 

Translational research

To translate our research to daily life, genetic animal models are used to study and modify the phenotype of BBDD. These models will give more information about the abnormalities in brain activity and structure that characterize the early and later stages. In cell cultures and organoids the molecular determinants of activity and connectivity are studied in detail. The use of human immune-pluripotent cell lines will also in BBDD research catalyze the translation from bench-to-bedside.
