Sustainability

UMC Utrecht's aims to contribute to a healthy life and a healthy society, not only for ourselves, but also for all future generations, by providing care, education and research that is future-proof, both ecologically and economically as well as socially. In doing so, we are committed to being sustainable in everything we do and to setting an example for others. That is why in 2013 we pursued a sustainably effective approach focused on the triple bottom line: people, planet, and profit. Since 2015, sustainability has been embedded in our corporate strategy Connecting U.

With our sustainability policy, we will contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These goals, set by 193 UN Member States, reflect what the world should look like - in terms of a 'sustainable society’ - by 2030.

Our focus until 2020 will be on two themes: Keep What is Healthy, Healthy, and Clean Environment. Our main goal is to make a positive impact on the health of the people we serve, today and into the future. Through Keep what is Healthy, Healthy, we aim to promote a healthy lifestyle, supporting our patients, employees and students in making healthy choices and taking control of their own health to the best of their abilities.

With Clean Environment, our goal is to reduce our negative impact; after all, environmental care is a natural antecedent to preventive health care. To achieve these ambitions, we have set the following specific goals: achieve CO2 neutrality by 2030. We will consume significantly less energy and what we use, we will generate or buy sustainably. And transition to a circular economy by 2030. We will not produce any more waste, only raw materials that can be upcycled or recycled for reuse.

Both themes contribute to preventive health care, the transition from sick care to health care, and thus to keeping health accessible and affordable in the future.
In addition to these sustainability themes, we will make our research sustainable with Science in Transition and we will work to expand workplace diversity and create jobs for people who don’t have access to the job market.

Sustainable action goes beyond our organization. That is why we collaborate with others on sustainable projects, sharing knowledge and experience. Both within the health care chain, the business community and in the region.

With Clean Environment, our goal is to reduce our negative impact. When you are in the business of taking care of people's health, helping pollute the environment that would just make them sick again or make it unlivable for future generations, just doesn’t tie in with what you do.

Through Keep what is Healthy, Healthy, we will increase our positive impact: improve people's health, for the generations of today and tomorrow.
